Competing Historical and Contemporary Visions of Canada’s Political Identity

Résumé :

From the times of the Confederation Debates between 1864 and 1867, many visions have competed and attempted to become hegemonic at defining Canada’s political identity. These visions have been formulated by politicians, judges, historians, philosophers, literary figures, legal scholars and political scientists. Royal Commissions and administrative leaders have also contributed to this exercise. This conference will provide an overview of what I believe to be the most historically significant and contemporary relevant among these visions. My hypothesis: it has always been a competition between visions and it should remain so. Such is the complexity of Canada.
